LISBON PAINTOUT

Lisbon Laundry (9 x 12 Oil on canvas panel)
This is my Lisbon painting for Bill Guffey's Virtual Paintout site. This alley can be found by going to [69 Campo de Santa Clara, Lisbon] on the Google Map, or just CLICK HERE. This is an interesting find. I was looking at sites around "Panteao Nacional", and set the yellow guy down at 63 Campo de Santa Clara. I moved two clicks toward the Panteao and suddenly was transported into this alley just east of Campo although the map shows me to still be on Campo.

I loved the multiple colors of the wall, and the tall double doors. The hanging laundry brings in some additional color to the painting. The perspective was changed so that you are looking more toward the wall as opposed to looking down the alley. Can you find a person in this painting? It's like the picture from our childhood, where you had to find the hidden objects.

Their are two sketches form this Virtual Paintout on my Sketch Blog PHIL'S SKETCHES.

  1. What a gorgeous painting, Phil. I thought it was a photograph at first. Love the paint on the walls of the buildings especially. Beautifully done!

  3. YOu wandered down a street and found a great little scene. It has a bit of everything that gives it character - the washing, walls, door and balcony. Your style is very lovely. I look forward to your next months city.

  4. Alissa, thanks for the dropping in on my blog. I checked in on your site and loved all the sketches. Are you using watercolor pencils? You have a good eye for perspective, and your skill at sketching people is impressive. I wanted to leave a comment on your site, But did not want to join Flicker.

  5. Phil, your paintings are absolutely wonderful. I think you need to take the "retired engineer" off your profile and add "professional artist".

  6. Pat,
Art is just a hobby for this retired engineer. As my good friend and fantastic artist Nat Fast always said when people asked him if he was an artist, "I am a painter".

  7. Wonderful painting! I found your site by way of Pat's and I'm so glad I did. Am really enjoying this visit to your blog. Absolutely love Lisbon Laundry. Is there a face in the lower window near the white doors? The painting looks much larger than 9 x 12 with so much fabulous detail!

  9. I liked Rosemary's guess, the light smudge in that window does suggest a figure.
Their is a person probably tending the potted plants by the open door on the balcony.

  10. This Lisbon piece is just wonderful. I joined VP too late and missed Lisbon for the challenge. I've visited it since though, through Street View, and I just love the colours and facades. You've captured it so well.
